Blog Social Networking

We live in a world where social Networking is essential, I can't remember the last time one of my friends actually picked up the phone and called me. Everyone these days talks to their friends or to strangers on Apps and multiple Social platforms whether it's via chat or video chat.

On a business level, social networking is being used these days by corporates is using new technologies to hire new employers. Most companies use LinkedIn to recruit new employees. On LinkedIn, employers can see check profiles of potential candidates, check their connections, mutual friends, resume and are able to chat with the real time. Another way how Social media is helping companies is how it bestowed upon companies the opportunity to benefit from communicating with there clients and getting feedback and the ability to target and customize advertising for specific customers.

On an individual level, social networking is now an essential part of every person's life. Men and women use dating apps and websites to meet their future partners, they also use other platforms to meet new friends with similar interests. Social Media platforms have also given individuals the power to complain and judge companies in front of everyone online.

Privacy is One of the main problems and the negative sides of social media. Some platforms are into collecting data and selling it to third parties causing complete invasion of user's privacy. The same platforms have very confusing privacy rules and as a result, People can get access to your pictures and locations and there have been some stalking incidents recorded. The privacy of Facebook has always been questionable, it was funny enough that Cindy Zuckerburg herself was questioning the privacy of her brother's platform when someone she didn't know was able to get access to one of her private pictures posted on Facebook. To sum it up " Facebook privacy settings are too confusing, and if you really don't want intimate photos out there, don't put 'em on Facebook" as mentioned in the article by the Atlantic.

Cyberbullying is also another negative side to social media platforms that is why all platforms added the report button for users to report violence, harassment or any similar posts.

The dilemma of whether social networking technologies make people more social or anti-social remains a controversial topic. Some believe that it helps people who are shy come out of their shell while others think that it glues people to their phones and have them completely ignore those surrounding them thus becoming anti-social in real life. We can see both scenarios in the "Antisocial Networking?" article by the NYT.

From my point of view, the future of such technologies remains unpredictable in alignment with human behavior. I personally would like for People in the near future to spend less time on their screens and more time actually living life with those surrounding them and enjoying their privacy, while others think that it will only get more open and everyone's information will be available everywhere.

  1. What's interesting was your comment about your friends not picking up the phone to call you. I utilize social media apps to actually call or video chat my friends because all the major apps such as Facebook messenger, Instagram and Snapchat now allows you to make video calls and voice calls to your friends. I wonder when Twitter is going to jump on the bandwagon and allow users to call each other.
