Privacy

While new media has many benefits and offers great opportunities to users, it comes with a lot of privacy and confidentiality issues. Whether it's a website or an App, they both contain confidential Data and users information, from contact details to credit card details. Not so long ago, Facebook was accused of selling users data to a third party and founder Mark Zuckerberg was called into court to testify in front of Congress.

Some companies use new media to collect or buy data such as credit card details, browsing history, contact details, interests, habits, and purchase history. The companies are then able to sell data to a third party and distributed to companies for marketing purposes. By doing so, companies are able to target consumers, trigger needs, and custom promotions for individuals.

Recently, there has been a viral video of someone speaking about a certain brand while their phone, specifically their Instagram App was open, and it took 2 minutes for an Ad of the same brand the person spoke about to appear on their page. This video raised awareness on how companies are not only using the data you input, but they also have access to your phone mic and probably your camera as well, causing a feeling of insecurity and invading consumer's privacy.

Another privacy concern is a hacker, a person who can log in to a system/device remotely, breaking all security barriers to steal data or leak information. As stated in the Washington Post article, more than 300,000 records of students and faculty members were leaked and compromised due to a security breach of the faculty's system. There was also a conspiracy that the latest US presidential elections were hacked by Russia, which goes to show how powerful and impactful a breach can be.
